Yazz Ahmed's 2017 album personifies self-doubt as a character — La Saboteuse, “a female saboteur, an anti-muse that spurs her into action” — and builds thirteen tracks of post-bop shaped by her Bahraini heritage around that idea, Lewis Wright's vibraphone and Shabaka Hutchings's bass clarinet threading through Ahmed's trumpet lines. The Wire named it Jazz Album of the Year; Stereogum and The Vinyl Factory both placed it on their year-end lists across genres, not just jazz ones. Released in four chapters with cover art by Bristol artist Sophie Bass, the first time Ahmed's music had been given a dedicated visual identity.
