About Thirty Birds

Thirty Birds takes its name from the Conference of the Birds, a twelfth-century Persian poem in which every bird sets out on a long journey to find their king. Most fall away along the road. Thirty birds complete it, and at the end, they come to a lake, mirror-still, and look down.

What they see is their own reflection. The king they were searching for all along was themselves. It's a strange ending for a quest, but music seems to work the same way. It doesn't hand you something from outside yourself, it draws out what's already there, put there by everything you've heard and felt and lived. The right record doesn't teach you something new so much as it shows you something that was already yours.

It felt right for a record store. There's more music out there than anyone could ever hold, but only some of it makes the journey here. Carefully chosen, not aimlessly collected.

The welcome swallow in the logo is our own local entry into the thirty, a native Australian species standing in for this store's place in that story, and an invitation, because that's the other thing the name means. Welcome.

That search plays out in practice as decades of digging, and DJing for a stretch of it along the way. Whatever the crate on any given night, soul was always the thread running underneath. That's still what the curation follows now.
The curation follows soul as a root system, not a genre boundary. It runs under jazz, funk, Afrobeat, disco, all of it. What ties it together isn't a sound so much as a feeling, music that means something. Sometimes that's the weight of it, the introspective, late-night kind of record. Just as often it's the lift, a disco chorus or a horn line that just wants you to move. Not everything here is serious. The thread is that all of it is felt, not just played.

Grading

We grade according to the Discogs Goldmine Standard. We listen to portions of most records and rarely assess visually alone. If you have any concerns about a grade before buying, get in touch, we're always happy to talk through a specific copy.
If an item arrives faulty, damaged, or materially different from how it was graded, contact us within 7 days and we'll sort out a repair, replacement, or refund. That said, your rights under Australian Consumer Law don't expire after 7 days, that window is just how quickly we can usually sort things out, not a cutoff on your rights.

We're not trying to be a high-volume store. If something's gone wrong with your order, we'd genuinely rather hear about it and fix it than have you stuck with a bad copy.

Packaging & Shipping

Records are foam or bubble wrapped and shipped in purpose-built corrugated cardboard vinyl mailers designed for 12" LPs, with crush zones on both sides, a peel-and-seal closure, and clear fragile marking.

Pre-loved records are removed from their outer sleeves before packing to prevent seam splits, and we provide a fresh inner and outer poly sleeve where we received the record without one.

We currently ship Australia-wide only, fully tracked, with cover for loss or damage included. Shipping is calculated at checkout based on the size of your order. We combine multiple items into one shipment automatically where possible.
