Where Alfa Mist’s earlier records worked through questions of identity, Variables asks something more specific: not who he is, but where — how he actually arrived at this point, creatively and personally. The ten-track record for ANTI- swings between big band arrangements, hip-hop-inflected rhythm and straight jazz improvisation, continuing a run that’s already taken Mist from his 2015 debut Nocturne through collaborations with Jordan Rakei, Tom Misch and Loyle Carner, plus neo-classical work for the London Contemporary Orchestra. Less a single sound than a documented process of figuring one out, the record's warmth coming from how openly it admits to still being unresolved.
