All Directions, released July 1972 on Gordy, was one of the last Temptations albums recorded at Motown's original Hitsville studio in Detroit before the label's move to Los Angeles, produced by Norman Whitfield with the Funk Brothers. The album's twelve-minute epic "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," reworked from a song Whitfield had first cut with the Undisputed Truth, won three Grammys and became the group's final number-one pop single. It reached number two on the Billboard 200.
