The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble's fourth album, released on Colemine in 2022, follows Build Bridges (a Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart No. 1) with ten tracks written directly out of the preceding two years — Covid, impeachment trials, the killing of George Floyd and the unrest that followed. Cinematic soul, spiritual jazz-funk and afro-funk blend across the record, track titles like “Step Down” and “Time To Rebuild” pointing toward repair rather than sitting in the difficulty of the moment. A band working through the news cycle without letting the groove suffer for it.
