Hot Buttered Soul, released June 1969 on Enterprise, is Isaac Hayes's four-track second album, made after his unsuccessful debut left him demanding full creative control. Backed by the Bar-Kays with Hayes on Hammond organ, it includes a twelve-minute "Walk On By" and an eighteen-minute "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," arriving amid Stax's scramble to rebuild its catalog after severing ties with Atlantic. It topped the R&B albums chart and reached number eight on the Billboard 200.
