Chocolate Chip, released 1975 on ABC via Isaac Hayes's own Hot Buttered Soul imprint, was his first release after Stax Records collapsed into bankruptcy that year. Hayes produced and arranged the record himself, playing keyboards alongside drummer Willie Hall, and it became his seventh and final number-one on the R&B Albums chart, certified gold. The record leans toward the emerging disco sound, layering horns and dance-ready rhythm under his signature deep vocal delivery.
