Be What You Are, released September 1973 on Stax, followed the Staple Singers' breakthrough Be Altitude: Respect Yourself, and reached number thirteen on the Soul LPs chart behind the singles "If You're Ready (Come Go with Me)" and "Touch a Hand, Make a Friend." The closing track, "Heaven," features uncredited acoustic and electric guitar from Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, arranged through Stax engineer Terry Manning, a friend of his from earlier sessions.
