Before they became the Lafayette Afro Rock Band, this group of American musicians had relocated to Paris and were playing the Barbès district, a neighbourhood with a large North African immigrant community whose sound worked its way into their music. Producer Pierre Jaubert spotted them and brought them into Parisound as session players; this 1973 debut, cut under his direction, is the record where their psychedelic funk first took shape, tracks like ‘Too Little Room’ and ‘Suicide’ carrying real weight under the groove. Strut’s reissue marks its first official vinyl release — a foundational document for a band whose breaks would later turn up sampled across hip-hop.
