The Psychedelic Freaks is a new alias for Melbourne's Horatio Luna, built specifically for this 2021 record on La Sape — six tracks chasing the electric-era Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and Frank Zappa records that inspired it, with Mandarin Dreams on guitar and On-Ly working wah-pedal effects alongside him. It's a deliberately loose, exploratory session, closer to jam-based Afrobeat and psych-fusion than anything in Luna's usual house and boogie lane, the shift in name signalling a genuine shift in sound rather than a side project done for its own sake.
