Africanism, released 2025 on Africa Seven, pairs The Last Poets with drum tracks Tony Allen recorded before his death in 2020, later built out with a full band including saxophonist Courtney Pine, pianist Joe Armon-Jones and multi-instrumentalist Kaidi Tatham. After the pandemic, surviving members Abiodun Oyewole and Umar Bin Hassan selected poems from the group's first two albums and set them against Allen's polyrhythms, the funky basslines and squealing sax solos never crowding out the Poets' voices. Formed in the late 1960s under the influence of South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, the group's Black Arts Movement-era verses, with lines like "you'll know it's revolution because there won't be no commercials," land with the same force decades on.
