1983-90, released on Soundway, compiles the two self-produced albums Nigerian musician Ayo Manuel made a decade apart. Love Candidate (1983) took two years to finish at Decca Studios in Lagos, Manuel saving up between sessions to fund the recording and eventually pressing 1,000 copies himself. Party Zone followed in 1990, recorded in nine months after he relocated to San Francisco and found studio access considerably easier. Across the six selected tracks, the set moves from synth-driven disco-funk toward a more polished Afro-pop, blending US production values with Yoruba talking-drum patterns and clear Fela Kuti influence. As Manuel has put it: "Everyone has a song inside them... if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything."
