Song For My Father, recorded across late 1963 and 1964 and released in 1965 on Blue Note, is Horace Silver's best-known album, its cover built around a photo of his father, John Tavares Silver, who emigrated from Cape Verde. The title track, inspired by a trip to Brazil, became one of the most recognizable themes in hard bop, and Silver dedicated it directly to his father, noting his own mixed heritage: "My mother was of Irish and Negro descent, my father of Portuguese origin." The record captures Silver's band mid-transition, blending his outgoing quintet with Blue Mitchell against the newer lineup that would carry his sound forward.
