Mingus Ah Um, recorded in May 1959 and released that October, was Charles Mingus's first album for Columbia Records, cut at the label's 30th Street Studio in New York. The Penguin Guide to Jazz calls it a tribute to Mingus's musical ancestors: "Better Git It in Your Soul" pulls from gospel, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" memorializes Lester Young. Columbia stripped the lyrics from "Fables of Faubus," a protest against Arkansas governor Orval Faubus; the vocal version surfaced only in 1961.
