Soul Explosion, originally released 1998 on Desco Records and later reissued by Daptone, was marketed on release as a rediscovered 1970s Nigerian funk record, complete with invented liner notes and a fictional critic's byline. It was really a Brooklyn studio project by Michael Wagner, Gabe Roth and Phillip Lehman, with most musicians performing under invented names; Cameroonian drummer Jojo Kuo, who had actually recorded with Fela Kuti, was the one real ringer. Musicians from the sessions later formed Antibalas.
