Simigwa, originally released 1975 on Ghana's Essiebons label and reissued by Strut in March 2025 as the first release in a series revisiting the imprint, pairs Gyedu-Blay Ambolley's highlife roots with American soul and funk. Recorded at Record Manufacturers Ghana studios, the six-track album, including "Kwaakwaa," "Akoko Ba" and "This Hustling World," helped establish Ambolley, previously a member of groups like the Uhuru Dance Band and Ghana Broadcasting Band, as an early adopter of a rap-like vocal delivery within highlife, a style he'd first explored on 1973's "Simigwa-Do," recorded two years before this fuller studio treatment.
