Recorded in Lagos in 1971 and released the following year, Shakara is built from just two extended compositions — “Lady” and the title track, both over thirteen minutes — with Tony Allen's drumming holding the Africa 70 band's funk, jazz and blues elements together under Kuti's saxophone and electric piano. A relatively compact entry in Kuti's catalogue by his later standards, but an early statement of the Afrobeat sound he'd expand on through the decade.
