Spirits, released May 2023 on Soundway Records, is the debut album from New Zealand jazz ensemble The Circling Sun, who channel the spiritual and modal jazz of Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane through Latin rhythms across eight tracks. Keyboardists Guy Harrison and Cory Champion of Clear Path Ensemble lead a lineup rounded out by percussionist and Soundway labelmate Julien Dyne, with vibraphone, acoustic bass and a choir arranged by Matt Hunter, plus a standout acoustic piano solo from Harrison on the track "Plume," one of the record's more restrained, unhurried moments.
