World Spirituality Classics 1, released May 2017 on Luaka Bop, compiles four devotional cassettes Alice Coltrane self-released between 1982 and 1995 for the Sai Anantam Ashram in Agoura Hills, California, the Vedantic Center she founded in 1975 and where she was known as Turiyasangitananda. Made during the decades she spent as a monastic teacher after John Coltrane's death, the recordings set Vedic bhajans and kirtans against an Oberheim synthesizer, organ, harp and a twenty-plus voice ashram choir. Engineer Baker Bigsby, who also worked with Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra, remastered the original tapes for this release, restoring music once heard only within the ashram itself.
