Things Have Got To Change, recorded May 1971 and released that year on Impulse!, gathers a large ensemble around Archie Shepp, trombonist Grachan Moncur III and violinist Leroy Jenkins, plus a gospel-inflected choir led by Joe Lee Wilson that included members of Shepp's own family. Two of the three extended pieces were written by trumpeter Cal Massey, a close collaborator of both Shepp and John Coltrane, including "Dr. King, the Peaceful Warrior," recorded soon after King's assassination.
