Six Howard University students led by their department head, trumpeter Donald Byrd, cut this 1974 debut with Byrd and Larry Mizell producing. Groove-first jazz-funk built around Kevin Toney's keyboards, Allan Barnes's saxophone and Keith Killgo's drums, the record reached number 15 on the Billboard 200 behind “Do It, Fluid,” also a charting single. The Van Gogh detail on the cover, a cropped piece of Wheatfield With Crows, gave the band a visual signature early.
