By 1975, Donald Byrd — a serious hard-bop trumpeter through the ’50s and ’60s — had fully turned toward the fusion and funk productions of Larry and Fonce Mizell. Places And Spaces leans on string arrangements, clavinet and horn charts closer to disco than jazz club, a move that split critics but sold: the album reached the R&B top ten and the pop top fifty, backed by session players including bassist Chuck Rainey and drummer Harvey Mason.
