Melbourne's Surprise Chef deliberately loosened up for this 2025 Big Crown release, trading the meticulous writing and recording of earlier records for a less planned process aimed at bringing more levity into the room. Eleven tracks moving between afro-funk, jazz-funk and sci-fi synth textures, the band experimented with unconventional recording techniques along the way, including placing a timpani in a bathroom during mixing to catch a different kind of reverb. High musicianship stays intact underneath the looser approach — a band having more fun without losing the chops that got them there.
