Harvey Sutherland’s Boy is built around a joke that’s also completely sincere: elaborate diagrams on the back sleeve dissect ‘neurotic funk’ in mock-academic language, while the songs underneath work through Sutherland’s actual relationship with his father and his own sense of identity, written partly during sessions squeezed between his psychotherapist’s office and the studio. He put his own face on the cover deliberately, pushing back against dance music’s usual faceless-producer default. Recorded across London, LA and his home studio between tours with Khruangbin and Hot Chip, the record draws on Todd Rundgren’s overcooked pop and New York boogie synths, DâM-FunK and CLAMM’s sos both guesting.
