Lanquidity, recorded overnight on July 17, 1978 at Bob Blank's Blank Tapes studio in New York straight after the Arkestra's Saturday Night Live appearance, gathers Sun Ra with core members including saxophonist John Gilmore, trumpeter Eddie Gale and oboist Marshall Allen for one of his more fusion-leaning sessions. Producer Bob Blank has described the sessions as largely ad hoc, built from horn charts loosely holding together freeform, improvised jams. Arkestra member Danny Ray Thompson has likened the opening track to an ancient Egyptian stargazing ceremony, and poet Mama Nzinga, reciting on the closer, calls it "the essence of light," spirit riding through deep, dark space.
