Lanquidity was recorded overnight on July 17, 1978, at Bob Blank's New York studio immediately after the Arkestra's Saturday Night Live appearance, and first released that year on Philly Jazz; this edition follows Strut's 2021 definitive reissue, which paired the original LP with alternate mixes from a 1978 Georgia Tech performance. Trumpeter Michael Ray recalled that "most critics felt it was more of a fusion-inspired record," while Blank remembered the sessions as "very ad hoc and freeform... Sun Ra just did his thing." Unusually for the Arkestra, the record features two electric guitarists alongside John Gilmore and Marshall Allen.
