Promises, released March 2021 on Luaka Bop, pairs producer Sam Shepherd (Floating Points) with Pharoah Sanders's tenor saxophone and the London Symphony Orchestra across one continuous nine-movement, forty-six-minute piece. Recorded in Los Angeles and London, the collaboration began after Sanders, then in his mid-seventies, discovered Shepherd's 2015 debut and the two met over lunch. It was Sanders's only studio album in over a decade and his final one before his death in 2022, and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.
