Songhoy Blues formed in Mali during a civil war and under a music ban, and this 2017 album for Fat Possum makes that origin explicit — the band has said plainly that resistance is what the group has always been about, framing their own music as the fight itself. Twelve tracks of desert blues pushed toward rock energy, with Iggy Pop guesting on “Sahara.” Formed by musicians displaced from the country's occupied north, the band turned that restriction into the reason for the record rather than a mere footnote to it.
