Recorded over two days in February 1969, Karma centres on “The Creator Has A Master Plan,” a 32-minute piece co-written with vocalist Leon Thomas that echoes Coltrane's A Love Supreme in scale if not sound — Thomas's yodeling and mantra-like repetition found, unusually for free jazz of the era, real FM radio airplay. Lonnie Liston Smith, Reggie Workman and Richard Davis fill the band out. Sanders's third album as leader, and generally considered his best-known work.
