A Love Supreme, recorded in a single session on December 9, 1964 and released on Impulse! in January 1965, is John Coltrane's four-part suite for his classic quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. The four movements build from a four-note bass motif into an extended meditation read as an expression of spiritual gratitude. It sold roughly 500,000 copies by 1970, far exceeding Coltrane's typical numbers, and was added to the National Recording Registry in 2015.
