Patrice, Patrice Rushen's 1978 debut for Elektra, marked her turn from the straighter jazz-funk of her Prestige years toward the sophisticated R&B of the late disco era, cut with producers Charles Mims Jr. and Reggie Andrews at Conway Studios. It was also her first outing as lead vocalist, mixing heartfelt, vulnerable songwriting on tracks like "Didn't You Know" with lighter numbers such as "Hang It Up." "Music of the Earth" became an underground favorite on New York club and Black radio despite limited label push, and this Strut reissue adds a Danny Krivit extended edit of the track. Rushen later reflected that on this record, "all of the things that I wanted to do were possible without limitation."
