São Paulo • Brasil, recorded in 1977 at RCA's São Paulo studio and reissued by Mr Bongo in 2018 as the first official pressing outside the country, is keyboardist Cesar Camargo Mariano's tour through his home city across eight tracks named for its neighborhoods and industry: "Metrópole," "Fábrica," "Poluição," "Metrô." Mariano, discovered at thirteen by trombonist Melba Liston and later Elis Regina's musical director and husband of eight years, led the record with guitarist Crispim Del Cistia, bassist Wilson Gomes and drummer Dudu Portes through dense, synthesizer-heavy Brazilian jazz-funk, grooves built to carry a specific sense of place rather than simply chase a dancefloor.
