Recorded in 1969-70 and released in 1971, this is Donald Byrd stretching Blue Note's hard bop toward funk — three tracks, the longest past seventeen minutes, built for extended groove over tight heads and solos. The band leans deep: Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Joe Sample on organ, guitarists Don Peake and David T. Walker among them. A transitional record bridging Byrd's straight jazz years and the jazz-funk he committed to soon after.
