Wonderlust, released March 2024, is the debut band album from On-Ly, the moniker of pianist and producer Joshua Smeltink, who blends house and hip-hop production instincts with the hard-hitting post-bop and jazz-rock of Weather Report and the Miles Davis Group. Across six tracks, the record works less like a conventional song cycle and more like a guided trip in the tradition of classic psychedelic albums, moving through through-composed passages, soft, heartfelt songwriting and sun-soaked instrumental peaks, with a tight band of collaborators filling out the arrangements alongside him. It arrived via the London label Albert's Favourites, home to a wider circle of similarly genre-blurring jazz acts.
