Allysha Joy produced her second album entirely herself, and calls it less a collection of love songs than ‘social, political, emotional anthems for change’ — a deliberate move away from romance toward something closer to a feminist statement. The Melbourne singer, also the voice of 30/70, builds the ten tracks from shuffling broken grooves and neo-soul boom bap, collaborating with a cast of female and non-binary artists (Ego Ella May, BINA, Rara Zulu among them) as genuine creative equals rather than guest slots. Following her 2018 debut Acadie: Raw, which won Best Soul Album at the Music Victoria Awards, this is Joy pushing further into her own production rather than repeating what already worked.
