Nubya Garcia’s debut album pulls from everywhere she grew up listening — reggae’s low end, Afro-diasporic rhythm, jazz improvisation, even a dubstep undertow on the title track. Produced with Kwes (Bobby Womack, Solange), Source treats the saxophonist’s cultural roots as raw material rather than genre tourism, guests including Ms Maurice, Cassie Kinoshi and Richie Seivwright filling out the record’s community feel. Garcia has called the title track ‘a paean to personal power,’ and that framing runs through the whole album: less a display of technique than an argument for showing up for each other. It arrived after Garcia had already picked up Jazz FM’s Breakthrough Act and UK Jazz Act awards.
