Recorded across 1964-65 and released that October on Philips, Pastel Blues arrived as Simone processed the deaths of Lorraine Hansberry and Malcolm X and her own appearance at the Selma march. Al Schackman and Rudy Stevenson's guitars anchor a small band behind her piano and voice, but the record's centre of gravity is “Sinnerman” — a ten-minute reworking of the traditional song that critic Richie Unterberger singled out as dwarfing everything else on the album.
