Cut in a single three-hour session on February 18, 1969, then reshaped in the edit by producer Teo Macero, this is the record that opened Davis's electric period. The band alone tells the story: Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock on electric piano together, Josef Zawinul, Dave Holland and Tony Williams. Neither jazz nor rock, critics said at the time, unable to agree on it — now regarded as one of the pivotal records in his catalogue.
