The Love Connection, released 1979 on Columbia, pairs Freddie Hubbard with arranger Claus Ogerman for five extended tracks that set Hubbard's trumpet against lush orchestral strings rather than a straight hard-bop rhythm section. Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke sit in on keys and bass, and Al Jarreau guests on a rework of "Little Sunflower," Hubbard's own 1967 tune, sung here for the first time. Columbia's veteran jazz A&R chief George Butler executive produced, positioning the record as a crossover bid.
