Afrique Victime, released May 2021 on Matador, is Mdou Moctar's reinvention of Saharan guitar music for a wider audience, nine tracks combining guitar pyrotechnics, full-blast noise and field recordings with lyrics on love, religion, women's rights and the legacy of Western colonialism in Africa. Drawing on 1970s and early-'80s rock alongside Tuareg guitar tradition, Moctar mixes acoustic passages into the electric sound his band is known for, building what he's called a "sonic journey." The record pays tribute to Abdallah Ag Oumbadagou, the Niger musician and political figure credited with first blending Tuareg guitar with drum machines, a contemporary of the better-known group Tinariwen.
