We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite, recorded in 1960 and released the following January on Candid, was produced by label co-founder Nat Hentoff and conceived by Roach with lyricist Oscar Brown Jr., who withdrew from the project before recording over disagreements about how his material was being reshaped. Abbey Lincoln sings across five movements addressing slavery, Emancipation and the era's civil rights struggle, with Coleman Hawkins guesting on "Driva Man" and Babatunde Olatunji's percussion driving "All Africa." Roach later said the group had "proved beyond all doubt that we're master musicians," adding that their task now was "to tell the dramatic story of our people."
