Recorded September 21, 1961 and released the following year, this quintet session — Byrd, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Butch Warren, Billy Higgins, and a young Herbie Hancock on piano — marks Hancock's first officially released Blue Note session. AllMusic calls it vital hard bop pushed toward its edges rather than played safe. A relatively overlooked Byrd record next to his later, funkier work, but the one that put Hancock on the label's books.
