Recorded February 7, 1960 with Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey, Soul Station opens and closes on standards — “Remember” and “If I Should Lose You” — with four Mobley originals filling the middle, including the bluesy title track. Critic Bob Blumenthal placed it alongside Rollins's Saxophone Colossus and Coltrane's Giant Steps as a defining statement for its leader. Kelly and Chambers would join the Miles Davis Quintet within the year.
