Recorded in 1963, A New Perspective pairs Byrd's quintet — Hank Mobley, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Burrell, Butch Warren, Lex Humphries — with an eight-voice wordless choir arranged by Duke Pearson and directed by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. Byrd called the result “a modern hymnal,” blending spirituals with jazz improvisation rather than treating them as separate traditions. It later placed on Pitchfork's list of the best albums of the 1960s, a rare crossover for a record built around a choir.
