Midnight Love, released November 1982, was Marvin Gaye's first album after leaving Motown, self-produced during a stretch living in Ostend, Belgium, where concert promoter Freddy Cousaert had invited him to recover from a difficult period. Recorded across four studios in Belgium, Los Angeles and Munich, it leans on reggae rhythms and early drum-machine and synthesizer textures. "Sexual Healing" won Gaye's only competitive Grammys, and the album went triple platinum.
