Madlib's 2003 remix project sent him digging through Blue Note's own archive rather than building beats from scratch, reworking session tapes into “Mystic Bounce,” “Distant Land” and other tracks that sit closer to instrumental hip-hop than jazz proper. “Slim's Return” brings in outside collaborators Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such, while the Morgan Adams Quartet Plus Two feature on “Stormy.” AllMusic called it a record built for background listening more than close attention — reassessed since as a genre landmark.
