Sour Soul, released February 2015 on Lex Records, pairs Toronto instrumental group BADBADNOTGOOD with Staten Island rapper Ghostface Killah, twelve tracks built around live instrumentation rather than sampling, deliberately chasing the recording techniques of 1960s and '70s soul. Frank Dukes contributes additional production, and the record's cinematic, live-band backdrop gives Ghostface's vivid street narratives an unusually widescreen setting. MF DOOM, Elzhi, Danny Brown and Tree all guest across the tracklist, each pulled into BADBADNOTGOOD's warm, slightly hazy sound rather than the other way around. The pairing grew out of the band's earlier instrumental hip-hop covers, which had already caught Ghostface's attention.
