Triple Trey, released September 2022 on Concord Jazz, began as a hip-hop record written and produced by Butcher Brown's MC and multi-instrumentalist Tennishu, before the Richmond, Virginia collective reshaped it into their first foray into big band jazz. Paired with the R4ND4ZZO BIGB4ND for the session, the twelve tracks bookend the record with two versions of the title cut. It's a genre pivot for a group that built its name on a looser, hip-hop-informed take on jazz and funk, this time recast in a full big band format with horns doing the heavy lifting instead of samples.
