Recorded in 1974 and released the following year on Flying Dutchman, Expansions is soul-jazz built for groove over solos — Smith on piano and electric keyboards, brother Donald Smith on flute and vocals, Cecil McBee on bass, plus a three-man percussion section behind the rhythm section. The six-minute title track opens the record and sets its direction: warm, funk-inflected and unhurried. It went on to become one of the most sampled records of its era.
