Secrets, recorded in June 1976 and released that August on Columbia, is Herbie Hancock's seventeenth album, following Man-Child and built with reedman Bennie Maupin and guitarist-turned-co-producer Wah Wah Watson. The record folds in a re-composed, nearly unrecognizable version of Hancock's own 1964 tune "Cantaloupe Island," alongside new jazz-funk originals driven by Paul Jackson's bass and a rotating cast of drummers including James Gadson. It arrived the same summer Hancock reunited with his acoustic quintet for the one-off V.S.O.P. shows.
